What is Multi-Factor Authentication?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA and sometimes referred to as Two-Factor Authentication – 2FA) means that if someone guesses, or steals, your password they will still need a second way to get into your account. This can be a text message to your cell phone, a phone call, or using an app (best one to use is the Microsoft Authenticator app on Google Play Store or the Apple App Store). You will be able to use any of these methods. You probably are familiar with this process if you use online banking, paying bills online, etc. Here is a YouTube video demonstrating the process https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8OzabuNwHI
To add/change phones numbers used for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using this link: https://aka.ms/MFAsetup
To enroll in MFA, you will need to follow these steps:
- Click on this link: https://aka.ms/MFAsetup. This will take you to the Additional security verification page.
- Sign in to Microsoft 365 with your work or school account with your password like you normally do. After you choose Sign in, you'll be prompted for more information.
- On this page, you will see two options: Authentication phone and Mobile app. Choose the option that suits you best. You can also choose more than one option for backup purposes.
- If you choose Authentication phone, enter your phone number and select whether you want to receive a phone call or a text message to verify your identity. Then click Set up.
- If you choose Mobile app, download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone and follow the instructions on the screen to scan the QR code or enter the code manually. Then click Set up.
- After you set up your verification method, you will receive a test verification code or notification. Enter the code or approve the notification to complete the setup.
- Click Next to finish the enrollment process.
Congratulations! You have successfully enrolled in MFA. From now on, whenever you sign in to your Microsoft Account, you will need to use your verification method to confirm your identity. This will help protect your account and our organization from unauthorized access and cyberattacks.
